Blogtown is getting some love… New plugins, new themes, accessibility updates, etc, etc
Here are some updates:
We’ve just enabled a plugin for all bloggers that lets you share your posts with Twitter, Facebook, and a host of other services. You can configure services to appear as icons, text, or both. Some services have additional options to display smart buttons, such as Twitter, which will update the number of times the post has been shared.
You can enable this new service under your blog’s Settings menu and look for the new Sharing option. Here’s a short video to show you how it works:
Hello Blogtowners… you may notice some changes coming to the site at the moment. We’re experimenting with some social networking features provided through the Buddypress plugins. Feel free to have a play with the new menus and functionality. We’ll be creating a help forum shortly where all registered users will be able to post questions and hopefully answer queries or offer advice to fellow bloggers.
We’ve just implemented two behind-the-scenes updates which allows your blog posts to push out updates to compatible services in near-realtime. The two technologies we’ve implemented are rssCloud and PubSubHubBub but there’s nothing you need to do on your blogs to configure them. This means that if you’re publishing your blog’s feed to sites like FriendFeed, Facebook, Twitter, or other realtime social networks, they should show up almost instantly.
We’ve updated the contact form that you can use on your blogs to allow visitors to send you an email. To use the new contact form, please use the following code in either a post or a page:
[contact-form]
There is nothing to configure with the contact form, emails will be sent to the author of the post or the page containing the code. So you could even have multiple pages with contact forms for specific blog authors. If you are currently logged into Blogtown, you won’t see all of the contact form fields as the messages will be sent from your account details, so if you want to see how it looks to your visitors be sure to log out first.
Let us know if you have any comments/questions/etc by using the contact form below which was created by the plugin!

Since Blogtown NZ launched, we have provided a great free blogging site exclusively for Kiwis. While we are committed to always providing a free service that anyone in NZ can use, we’ve had lots of requests for additional features such as the ability to turn off the ads that are displayed on blogs, as well as increasing the storage space for photos.
So today we are launching the Blogtown NZ Supporter feature. This enables any blogger to sign up as a Blogtown NZ Supporter and as a Supporter you’ll receive an extra 1GB storage space on the server (10 times more than free blogs) and your blog will no longer display any ads.
Another often requested feature is the ability to use a custom domain name with your blog. We’ve just implemented this feature too and are making it available to our Supporters. There are several other new features in the pipeline which will be made available exclusively to our Supporters.
To become a Supporter, please log in to your Site Admin page and check on the left-hand menu for a section called “Supporter”. It costs just $5 per month to sign up, but if you pay annually then you save $10 by only having to pay $50 per year. Payment is handled through PayPal so you can use your existing PayPal account or any major credit card.
If you have any questions or comments, please raise a support request through your Site Admin, or send us an email to [email protected].
A number of bloggers reported that the Dashboard link in the admin site wasn’t working properly when first entering your blog’s admin area. The end result was that the first page of the admin section was blank although you could still navigate to the other sections.
This issue has now been fixed and you should correctly see the Dashboard again after entering the admin section.
Hi everyone – we’ve finally upgraded Blogtown NZ to the latest version which brings with it lots of improvements, the most noticeable of which is the vastly improved admin area. The main section menus are now on the left side, and you can expand and minimize them as you wish, and the admin section will automatically save the changes you’ve made.
This update also fixes a number of bugs that had been reported, but if you find anything else that isn’t working quite right, please fill out a support request from the admin section of your blog, or send an email to [email protected].
We have made lots of updates to the site over the last couple of days and I’ll quickly run through some of them now.
First of all, we have finally moved onto the new server and it is performing better than expected. Hopefully you should have all noticed the speed improvements.
As a result of the server move the stats package that we were using wasn’t compatible, so we have removed it from the site, but have implemented a new, better stats package which you can enable by heading into the Plugins section in your admin site. Once activated you’ll see a new menu called “StatPress” which will show you all your blog stats in near real-time.
All bloggers can now upload their own avatar to represent either your blog or your user account. You can find these settings under the user settings or general settings menus in the site admin.
There are more updates to come over the next few days including several new, advanced themes, as well as other new features.
